Education & Outreach

To further advance our educational mission, BIOS has integrated robotic technologies into all of our educational and outreach efforts, from on-island grade-school programs to research activities at the undergraduate and graduate levels.

MAGIC Interns

Interns enjoy working and learning about AUV technologies in action at the Bermuda Institute of Ocean Sciences. Students come to Bermuda for either summer studies or the fall semester.

2016 MATE Bermuda Regional ROV Challenge

Over a hundred students from across Bermuda met at the National Sports Centre on Saturday, April 30th, to compete in an underwater robotics challenge, a partnership between BIOS and the US-based Marine Advanced Technology Education program, with support from HSBC. The robots, known as remotely operated vehicles, or ROVS, were built over many months by students in collaboration with their teachers and other adult mentors. Twenty eight teams competed; first place teams included students from Clearwater Middle School, which also won top honors in 2015.

2015 Bermuda Union of Teachers professional development workshop

In October 2015, BIOS educators hosted a professional development workshop for members of the Bermuda Union of Teachers where they designed, built and tested their own remotely operated vehicles. Bermuda’s teachers were engaged in the scientific concepts and practical applications of underwater robots, better enabling them to translate these ideas back in the classroom to their own students.
